Love Surly and love the Cross-Check....just had a TIME getting the right frame size. The Cross-Check is a legacy Surly bike and can be built so many ways....just check the geo carefully.
Given the CX-like BB clearance, this frame is BIG with a funky headtube. Part of the charm, but part of the need to research this frame carefully.
I'm normally a 52-53cm frame but after getting a 52cm Cross-Check for my build, I ultimately sized-down to a 50cm (where Tree Fort Bikes saved the day!). The difference is subtle in reach/stack, but as a commuter/beer grabber/grocery getter, I wanted flexibility with the standover height. SO is listed with Surly Knard 41c's on Surly site, but this 50cm with 37c WTB tires is clearing ~30.5" SO. This gives me more leeway to max out with 45c tires later and still be a "casual" height. The 52cm felt just a tad too big with seat height I wanted...better to be a little small than too large.
