It depends on the frame and the bottom bracket standard the frame uses. Shimano road cranks use a 24mm spindle and either BSA, Italian or BB86 bottom brackets. There are some aftermarket companies that do make BB30 and PF30 bottom bracket conversions to be able to run the smaller 24mm spindle Shimano crank in a frame designed to be used with a 30mm spindle crank.
