The Salsa Mukluk lives up to Salsa's "Adventure by Bike" statement like no other bike in their line up. Fat Biking started as a way for people who live north of the 40th Parallel to be able to extend their riding season throughout the winter, but as riders started using the bikes more and more because of the increased traction and stability in conditions other than snow.
The Mukluks Explore geometry puts the rider in a comfortable neutral position that is aggressive enough to rip around the local singletrack, but comfortable enough for a week long overland tour in places you didn''t think a bike could get you.
The Mukluk is equipped with the right mounts should the beaches of Alaska or the forrest roads of Michigan''s Upper Peninsula call your name. The Mukluk has the following mounts to add all your gear
Salsa also teamed up with
Revelate Designs to create frame bags specifically for the Mukluk. Choosing a bag is easy just get the same size bag as your frame!
For 2013 Salsa did make some improvements/changes to the Mukluk. New for 2013 are:
- 44mm headtube allows for the use of a straight 1-1/8 fork or if you need to shed so weight the new tapered Beargrease aluminum fork will also work if you change out the bottom headset cup.
- Alternator dropouts have been added for those looking to run your Mukluk as a single speed. The Salsa Alternator dropouts were previously only available on the Ti version. Alternator dropouts are also used on the race proven El Mariachi in the NUE Series races and Ride the Divide Events.
- Mukluk 2''s get new paint, This year you have the option of white/green on both the frameset and the complete or exclusive to the frameset is the option of a very limited black/purple color way.
Tips for building the Salsa MuklukHeadset: The Salsa Beargrease uses a 44mm Zero Stack headset. For tapered forks you can use an EC44 1.5" lower cup.
Front Wheel: Salsa uses a non-offset wheel built on a 135mm hub. Wheels built for Surly Fat Bikes with an offset will not work.
How to tell if your wheel is offset? The spokes on a Rolling Daryl or Clownshoe will be all on one side of the rim. On a Large Marge the Spoke holes do not run through the center of the rim but are pushed off to the right side. If you are using the stock fork the front hub needs to have the brake spaced for the rear MTB standard. Paul and Phil Wood hubs will not work because they are spaced for the front wheel brake offset.
Fork: The fork dropouts are spaced for 135mm hubs and the disc brake tabs are offset for 51mm IS rear. This is key if you try a front IS adaptor it will not offset the rotor properly. You also need to make sure you are using a 135mm front hub that is spaced for 135mm rear. Phil Wood and Paul make hubs that are spaced for a front brake adaptor and will not fit properly.
Rear Wheel: The Mukluk uses a 170mm rear hub built symmetrically. The chainline is designed around a 82mm rim with a 4.0" tire. You can run 100mm rims but you may experience chain rub in certain gear combinations.
Crank/Bottom Bracket: The Mukluk uses a 100mm bottom bracket shell. This means your standard outboard bearing mountain crankset will not fit. If you have an older ISIS crankset it will fit if you use a DH bottom bracket such as the one offered by FSA. E.13 and Surly offer fat bike specific cranks that work well and will give you the greatest gear range and the least amount of chain rub.
Front Derailleur: The Salsa Mukluk includes a Problem Solvers Direct High Mount Front Derailleur adaptor. The derailleur is top pull.
