The Salsa Mukluk is Salsa's take on the new category of mountain bikes called Fat Bikes or Snow Bikes. These bikes use big tires to roll over loose terrain that would otherwise stop a traditional bike in it''s tracks.
For 2012 the Mukluk adds a gusset at the headtube to meet EU safety standards. The Mukluk 2 frame has an upgraded Ano finish which is not only scratch resistant but also shaves some weight over the powder coated Mukluk 3.
There are a few things to keep in mind when building a Mukluk that may be different from other bikes that you may have built in the past.
- The bottom bracket on a Salsa Mukluk measures 100mm unlike a traditional mountain bottom bracket that is 68/73mm wide. If you are using older ISIS cranks for your build FSA offers an option in 100mm that will work just fine.
- The Hub Spacing on a Salsa Mukluk measures 170mm in the rear and 135mm in the front, while a standard mountain bike uses 135mm rear and 100mm front. The wider rear hub allows the Mukluk to use wheels that are built without an offset both front and rear.
- Tire/Rim Width on the Mukluk will vary a bit depending on which cranks you run. The rear will fit 3.8 tires on 82mm rims and the front will fit 4.5 tires on 82mm rims with a little room to spare.
- Front Derailleurs on Fat Bikes can be tricky because most use an E-type which has limited adjustments. The Mukluk uses and includes a Problem Solvers High-Direct Mount adapter which adds to some flexibility in adjustments.
