all about the

Salsa 2013 Vaya 3 Complete Bike

The Salsa Vaya has become a staff favorite because of it's neutral geometry that is relaxed enough for a week long tour, yet still aggressive enough to make that Saturday morning ride with the people from work fun. The Vaya unlike a lot of road bikes doesn't limit itself to pavement. The larger volume tires and steel frame soak up all the gravel and forest service roads you can throw at it.

The Vaya can be loaded with both front and rear racks. The custom rear dropouts move the rack further back on the bike eliminating the need for a longer wheelbase, which can slow down the handling but still achieve good heel clearance.

Smaller sized (50-52cm) Vaya's use a 26" wheel while the larger ones use a 700c (54cm ). Salsa uses a smaller wheel to help eliminate toe overlap and still keep the bike handling like the larger ones.

The Vaya 3 features:
  • Shimano Deore/Sora drivetrain
  • Cane Creek Headset
  • Avid BB7 Brakes
  • Continental TourRide Tires
So, what happens when you buy a Complete Salsa from Tree Fort?

Well, when we receive our bikes from Salsa they take a trip over to our service department and gets fully assembled and tuned. We take it for a spin around the block, and off a few sweet jumps. If it survives, it may make it's way to our sales floor to be drooled upon by people that love bikes.
Once your order is received we carefully re-box and send it your way! When you get it, there will be minimal assembly required, if you run into any bumps give us a call and we'll be stoked to help! 734.484.9999

Yes, this bike has plenty of clearance for tires up to ~45mm.

My wife is 5ft 3in and needs a small frame and 26". Can I get this with moustache bars
answered by: t.young
Only the 50cm and 52cm have 26" wheels. We currently have a 52cm. We don't swap out parts, but you would be able to customize it. New bars would necessitate new shifters and brakes since the ones on the drop bars wouldn't work on moustache bars.

Review of the Salsa 2013 Vaya 3 Complete Bike:
Bought this bike for an introduction into road-riding, but wanted something that could still go down a gravel road without feeling like it was going to break in half.

I mounted Specialized Control tires in 1.8" for a more compliant ride on 'rough' gravel roads. I know that 'rough' is a relative term, but I found the Continental Touring tires it comes with lend a stiff, harsh ride- and they're actually a heavier tire than the Specialized. Anyways, whatever works for you- I come from a MTB background, so I like wide tires! lol

Salsa's sizing chart on their website would seem to be fairly accurate...I'm 5"11' and ordered a 58 cm based on some other make/models I rode- but I ended up installing a shorter stem with a higher degree of rise. The 57 cm would have likely been a better fit. (Salsa's site recommends a 57 cm for a 5'11" rider)

I installed an OMM rack on the rear, and did a short 3-day, 180 mile trip in eastern AZ/western NM, with about 30 miles of gravel road riding on the Continental Divide mountain bike route, and the bike did well. Even the modest SunTour wheels held up on the severely washboard gravel and 35 lbs of luggage on the rear. (I need to learn to pack lighter!!!)

Lower-grade Sora components continue to work well for the first thousand miles, although I find the 30-tooth front sprocket too high for my liking when loaded and climbing in the hills.

Certainly not the lightest steel-framed bike you could buy; by no means the heaviest, either. Overall a good value, I think, in either the 2 or 3 version.

Summed up: Good entry-level road bike capable of more than just paved road riding. An even better value than the price would indicate.

Yes, I would recomend this to a friend.
