2013 Beargrease Fat Bike Frameset
The Salsa Beargrease is the Mukluk's lighter faster sibling. Salsa takes the epic ride proven geometry of the Mukluk and puts it on a diet. The Beargrease looses the rack mounts and trades in the steel Enabler fork for an aluminum fork and over 2 pounds of weight savings.
The Beargrease is made from Salsa''s Xtrolite tubeset which is the same material used on other Salsa''s such as the Mamasita and Spearfish. To keep the Beargrease looking good and to keep weight down Salsa uses a black anodized finish.
Tire Clearance
One of the most asked questions is what size tire can I run?
Fork: Salsa designed the ultra light aluminum for to be able to accommodate all of the 4.0" tires on 82mm rims (stock width on the complete) and the Surly Big Fat Larry on rims up to 100mm wide (Surly Clownshoe). Will not work with the Surly Bud or Knard tires.
Frame: The rear wheel can be a little trickier because unlike the fork spacing you have drivetrain as a variable. With most cranks you will be able to run 4.0" tires on 82mm rims (stock width on the complete) with little to no chain rub. 100mm rims with either 4.0" tire or Big Fat Larry''s is going to result in the loss of gearing, but will work and I am sure there will be tons of posts all around the internet showing that it can be done. Surly Lou or Knard tires will however not clear the frame. If you need that kind of rubber maybe you need to look at a Moonlander or Krampus.
Tips for building the Salsa Beargrease
Headset: The Salsa Beargrease uses a tapered Zero Stack headset. The upper cup is a 44mm and the lower cup is 56mm. If you are using a Chris King headset, you will want the Inset 2. For Cane Creek and other headset companies that use the S.H.I.S. system you will want to look for the headset marked ZS44/56.
Front Wheel: Salsa uses a non-offset wheel built on a 135mm hub. If you have a Mukluk built up that you are looking to swap parts out on you will be in luck. Wheels built for Surly Fat Bikes with an offset will not work. How to tell if your wheel is offset? The spokes on a Rolling Daryl or Clownshoe will be all on one side of the rim. On a Large Marge the Spoke holes do not run through the center of the rim but are pushed off to the right side. If you are using the stock fork the front hub needs to have the brake spaced for the rear MTB standard. Paul and Phil Wood hubs will not work because they are spaced for the front wheel brake offset.
Fork: Like many forks on the market the Beargrease fork uses a 1-1/8 to 1.5" taper. The fork dropouts are spaced for 135mm hubs and the disc brake tabs are offset for 51mm IS rear. This is key if you try a front IS adaptor it will not offset the rotor properly. You also need to make sure you are using a 135mm front hub that is spaced for 135mm rear. Phil Wood and Paul make hubs that are spaced for a front brake adaptor and will not fit properly.
Rear Wheel: The Beargrease uses a 170mm rear hub built symmetrically. This is the same build spec as the Salsa Mukluk. The chainline is designed around a 82mm rim with a 4.0" tire. You can run 100mm rims but you may experience chain rub in certain gear combinations.
Crank/Bottom Bracket: The Beargrease uses a 100mm bottom bracket shell. This means your standard outboard bearing mountain crankset will not fit. If you have an older ISIS crankset it will fit if you use a DH bottom bracket such as the one offered by FSA. E.13 and Surly offer fat bike specific cranks that work well and will give you the greatest gear range and the least amount of chain rub.
Front Derailleur: The Salsa Beargrease includes a Problem Solvers Direct High Mount Front Derailleur adaptor. The derailleur is top pull.

Can I you use a standard 34.9 clamp front mech on the salsa beargrease frame
A.
anwered by: canteau
The Salsa Beargrease is designed to be used with a Problem Solvers front derailleur adapter and a high direct mount front derailleur.
A standard 34.9 clamp front derailleur will be mounted too far inward to work properly and will have tire fit issues.

I have a 2012 Mukluk.
Will all of the components transfer to the bear grease frame?
A.
anwered by: canteau
You will need a new headset for the tapered fork and maybe a new cable set because they are routed on the top tube instead of the down tube.
