I bought these pedals so I could cruise around the neighborhood with the kids on my mountain bike without having to wear my spd mountain bike shoes. They also work well for me on the trail when it gets technical. I can clip-out and use the platforms.

Summed up: Use primarily the platforms with regular shoes and they have worked fine.
