asked by: a guest Replacing V brakes on an older MTB. Would these be a good choice? And, which brake levers would I need (I've gathered that V brake levers won't work)?

I still ride my vintage 1988 mountain bike. The stock cantilever brakes and pads were never any good - plastic and stamped steel abominations. I've started replacing worn parts and it was time to do the brakes. The Tektro Oryx are very inexpensive, but nice beyond expectations. They are well finished and easily adjustable. I would gladly give them 5 stars considering their value, however, the stock pads are junk. The pads make these brakes feel cheap. So, I replaced the pads with some Kool-Stop Dual Compound Mountain Pads and couldn't be happier. Serious stopping power. In fact, I started experiencing that front wheel chatter the cyclocross folks complain about. Well, the fix for that is to move the cable stop from the old flexy steel stem to a nice new "Tektro Front Cable Hanger Canti Fork Mount". That sucker works wonders and now I've got modern feeling brakes on my old rig for cheap money.
