The Surly Karate Monkey is a mountain bike that uses 29" wheels and while that may be common place now when the 'Monkey was first created it was one of the few. Surly wanted a bike that could not only ride single track well but could also make for a fun bike in the city. The 29er fit the bill because 29ers are based on 700c rims with fat tires. This makes switching over to a touring or cross tires a breeze.
Surly is deeply rooted in the singlespeed world. Their first bike the 1x1 was one of the first "singlespeed" specific mountain frames on the market. They kept this tradition alive with the Karate Monkey, but it can also run as a geared bike.
