The Surly Steamroller is the bike you'll want to ride to work, not have to ride. The frame is made from CroMoly Steel which will give you a Cadillac smooth ride that can''t be had from aluminum frames.
The geometry of the Steamroller is more road bike that pure velodrome speedster, which makes more sense for real world riding (unless your street contains banked wood turns, then please let us know so we can come play!).
Surly wouldn''t be able to call it the Steamroller if it only ran on 23c tires, because what can you run over on tiny tires? maybe a small pebble or two? The Steamroller can take studded 35''s with ease, perfect for the temperature challenged northern winters and with 32c cross tires, the Steamroller plays well in the single speed class during cross season.
What does not Steamroller not do well? Tricks... The Steamroller is made to get you to work, the bar, maybe softball practice but it is not made to do bar spins. If equipped with the front brake, it will get hung up on the frame causing you to crash and not get the girl/guy you were trying to impress. So don''t try it!

I've had my Steamroller for a couple of years, but the only real difference between mine and the newer model are the seat and bars. (Stuff you could easily change if you wanted.) Of all the bikes I own, this has gotten more miles than anything else, by a wide margin. (Geared road bikes, and a variety of mountain bikes from rigid to fully suspended.) The ride is fast and smooth.
The frame and components have been solid, and provide a sweet ride for as long as you want to keep moving. I rode fixed for the first two seasons, and have been riding single for this one. Rides of 50-60 miles in either set-up have been a blast. She's been the first choice for commuting and all errands for the past couple of months. As a result of the addition to single speed, I installed a matched set of brakes. Other than that, I've only changed the tires/tubes when worn out.
I'll be building up a Big Dummy in the next couple of weeks, so riding time will be shared, but at least it's with another Surly.
