For 2013 all updated Shimano mountain derailleurs will work with both new direct mount frames and traditional derailleur hanger based frames.

Shimano 10-speed mountain and road are not compatible. You can however use a 9-speed mountain drailleur with 10-speed road shifters

I needed a short-cage derailleur for my 1x10 upgrade and went with the FR ("typical MTB cassette" in the description here) version so it'd work with my 11-36 cassette. Chain slap is pretty much gone with this RD. Set the clutch to "on" and bomb down the trail. Bike is quiet, no dropped chain, couldn't be happier. And it looks pretty good too!
