The Shimano XT M8000 11-speed cassette will fit the freehub body on your 9-speed rear wheel and work with most wheels.
We have run into issues on some wheels that use straight pull or oversized spokes where the cassette hits the spokes.

I have this on my fat bike as a 1X11 with a 34 tooth cog up front and the XT M8000 medium cage rear deraillure, as well as the mating shifter. I did not have to alter the hub coming from a 1X10 setup, and it works flawlessly.
One note on setup, backpedalling in the 42 ring would initially make the chain drop down a few cogs. Proper adjustment of the B-limit screw only helps to a certain degree, but will not cure it. After riding a bit I'm not seeing this happen. I'm using KMC chains.
