Will this work for 8 speed trek 4900 mountain bike?

It will work if the Trek has a cassette rear hub. If the rear hub uses a freewheel, then it will not.

cyclingmikeBog standard fare, it does the job - had to be the Shimano 11-32T weighed slightly more than the SRAM ( ~25g my home scale) for you weight weenies, but I feel this very slight weight penalty is a good compromise for better spacing between gears. Works fine with the Shimano road bike components and shifts smoothly and while I had it apart replaced the chain.
