First--I'm a big fan of Advent. I've run the 9sp on my less-serious MTB and the shifting really is on par with modern 11-12 speed Shimano XT. Light, smooth, and hassle-free gear changes. If you don't mind fewer cogs, it is a cheap solution that isn't a downgrade, especially if you can get the shifter with bearings and the clutch derailleur.
This shifter works 100% as smoothly and precisely as the original Advent 9sp XPress shifter. The added silicone gripper on the main lever is a huge improvement over the XPress' slippery feel and the slimmer shape of the entire unit is a nice bonus.
My one issue with the Trail Pro is both levers are thumb-activated whereas the XPress had an index-activated trigger for the return shifts. If you're fine with thumbs-only action, this is a great shifter. I just happen to prefer the XPress (don't forget to add some rubber grip pads to the levers).
