If your looking for a lightweight, but grippy and durable tire, then consider the Pilot sport from Michelin a winner. Like Michelin's road race tires, a high density HD reinforcement layer helps keep punctures to a minimum. The Tread pattern was derived from Michelin''s MotoGP motorcycle tire designs so you know it''s fast. A reflective sidewall will help to keep you safe during your commute.

I bought 700x32, and they measure an actual 32.
Easy to mount, not especially heavy, and they
are secure.
I ride some crushed-stone rail trails, and really don't want to ride my Pro3's there.
I would guess they would be perfect commuter tires...sturdy, reflective, not too slow.
I've only had these tires for 3 weeks (700x35c). They actually measure bigger than 35c, more like 38c. After putting ~220 miles on them, I can say I like them very much. Great price and value. Previous tires were the Vittoria Randonneur Hyper. Decided to try something new after one Hyper was slashed by glass.
I got a set of these for my Cannondale Badboy while in Italy. I replaced the previous tires because they didn't handle well on the Italian pavement. Of particular concern was the Marble that they put in the roads there, which gets particularly slick with any moisture. After wiping out on a bit of road that merely had morning dew on it, I replaced the stock tires with these. They worked great! Now that I'm back in the states, they're great for commuting on, and riding around town. Excellent tire for day to day riding, and if there is concern about traction in water-slick environs.
