Welcome to the evolution of Cross Country racing machines. Cannondale has employed some seriously advanced engineering to make the Scalpel one of the smoothest and most efficient bikes in the arena of cross country recreational riding and racing.  With an ultra-simple rear shock which uses no bearing and only one pivot point, and a lightweight Lefty fork, this bike isn't going to leach precious calories when you need them the most on climbs, and is going to keep you comfortable and upright while staying nimble on quick descents.  Cuts like a knife, but it feels so right.
