all about the

45NRTH Wolvhammer Winter Cycling Boot - MY18

45NRTH updated the 2018 Wolvhammer Winter Cycling Boot to include a new larger fit, that is closer to that of the Wolfgar than the previous model and a new outsole that is better on ice thanks to its Hypergrip design.

The outsole for the Wolvhammer has been re-designed for 2018 and because you won't be walking in them it may be something you typically would overlook. Well, you shouldn't. 45NRTH incorporates their Hypergrip sole on the Wolvhammer, the same outsole construction that is used on the 45NRTH Japanther, but with deeper lugs for better snow traction along with improved stability on ice, an issue you are sure to encounter when riding in below freezing temperatures. Nothing is more embarrassing than falling at a red light or trail head due to an icy surface. Hypergrip soles combine a sticky rubber sole with siping and Hypergrip blocks that feature microglass for second to none traction. And if that isn't enough, the Wolvhammer is designed to accept toe spikes for additional traction.

The 45NRTH Wolvhammer winter cycling boots are made to work with most clipless pedals that use a 2-bolt cleat such as Crank Brothers, Time and Shimano. For some pedals you may need to use cleat shims for proper cleat engagement. When installing the cleats make sure to add a little grease to the threads to prevent rust. The 2018 Wolvhammer does not include an insert to be used with flat pedals.

Wolvhammer continues to use the Aerogel insoles to insulate the foot from the metal cleat which can create a cold spot on even the most insulated of shoes. Aerogel is compression resistant insulation that continues to insulate even under the hardest of pedal strokes. Should you need custom support, additional insoles should fit over the Aerogel insoles.

If your winter riding adventures take you into areas of deep snow that require hike-a-bike to get through the really deep stuff, the Wolvhammer has toe hooks that can be paired with the 45NRTH Bergraven Gaiters for knee-high protection and additional insulation around the calf and knees.

The question we receive most often is should I buy the size I typically wear or go up a size? Some of that is going to depend on the thickness of the socks you wear or if you fall between whole sizes. 45NRTH does have an online fit guide to help make selecting the proper size a little easier, so grab your favorite socks and click the following link here. Even though the 2017and 2018 Wolvhammer boots look visually similar they are completely different when it comes to size. The 2018 Wolvhammer boot is wider and slightly longer than the outgoing model, with a fit that is closer to the Wolfgar.
  • Full lace up draw cord closure
  • Works with 2-bolt cleats
  • Adjustable ankle wrap
  • Hypergrip sole

45NRTH Wolvhammer Winter Cycling Boot - MY18

asked by: cbernier
I wear a size 44 in the Japanther, Will 43 fit me? I don't wear thick socks.
answered by: tplizga
Wolvhammer boots run true to size and may be too small. 45NRTH has a system for you to find your size http://45nrth.com/files/pages/45N_Wolvhammer_Sizing_Chart.pdf

Struggling to get hold of these boots in the UK. Do you ship internationally?
answered by: mwirth
I'm sorry but we do not ship Internationally yet this time.

I'm a 46 in the old zipper style and they fit perfectly. Should I get a 45 in these?
answered by: canteau
A lot of it will depend on the volume of your foot, if you needed to bump up to the 46 because of the width then you might be able to size down to the 45. If you needed the 46 for length then you may want to stay with the 46 as the overall length is similar but with a larger volume.
asked by: A Visitor
Is wind chill a factor with these boots?
answered by: canteau
Generally speaking wind chill only effects exposed skin or areas of the body not covered by a wind blocking material such as tights without Windblocker or a wind proof outer shell. If you can eliminate the wind from taking body heat from your insulating layer, it doesn't become as much of a factor like the actual ambient temperature does.

The leather/Condura upper does a pretty good job itself in blocking the wind, but is aided by a wind and waterproof membrane for additional protection.
asked by: A Visitor
What is the temp range for this boot that it is good for?
answered by: canteau
45NRTH rates the Wolvhammer cycling boot temperature range as 0-25 degrees Fahrenheit.

Review of the 45NRTH Wolvhammer Winter Cycling Boot - MY18:
I am a bike commuter who, on occasion, likes to ride when it is really cold--10 degrees F. is about my bottom limit. My commute usually starts at 5:15 A.M., and is 16 1/2 miles each way. Have been using the 45nrth Fasterkatts for the last two years, but found that my feet would get cold around 20 degrees, or so, towards the end of my commute (I know they are rated down to 25 F.). Purchased these Wolvhammer boots for the really cold commutes. WOW! I love these boots, and my feet stay nice and warm! Have used them down to around 10 degrees F., and they are great. They are very easy to get on and off your feet--much easier than the Fasterkatts. For commuting, they have met my expectations spectacularly. On a weekend ride, I spent over 2 hours in them at temperatures between 10 deg. F., and 29 deg. F., with a pair of Merino wool socks, and my feet never even got a bit cold. Nice, happy, warm feet for the entire ride. I liked these boots so much, that I ordered a second pair for my son, who also enjoys cold-weather cycling. He has experienced the same satisfaction with his pair as I have with mine.

Way to go 45nrth--you just keep getting better and better!

Big fan of 45nrth in Oklahoma.

Summed up: Super boot for cold-weather commuting! Have found they keep my feet warm at 10 deg. F., for an hour and fifteen min. commute.

Yes, I would recomend this to a friend.

Review of the 45NRTH Wolvhammer Winter Cycling Boot - MY18:
I have had these for less than 2 weeks. I have done 2 rides while wearing them. Size 46, with one pair of heavy wool socks. My normal size for MTB and or road shoes is 44 or 44.5.

1. Temp 21. Duration 1h-35m
2. Temp 23. Duration 1h-15m.

Both rides were on road bikes with SPD pedals, riding on paved roads. Avg. speed 18-20 mph.

My feet stayed comfortable for the duration of both rides.

I also have a pair of Shimano MW7s. Size 46. For me the Shimano's are only good down to about 30, even when I wear Neoprene booties over the MW7s.

The Wolvhammers are heavier and more clunky than the Shimanos. However, once I'm riding I do not notice the difference. What I do notice is that my feet stay warmer.

I suspect a lot of folks think of using the Wolvhammers for riding MTBs or Fat Bikes. For me the Wolvhammers are great for riding on road bikes when the temps are below 30*.

Note: I went with the size 46 so that I could wear an additional pair of socks, if necessary. Thus far I haven't felt the need for another pair of socks. Yet I do not feel that the 46s are too large even with only one pair of heavy wool socks.

Summed up: If I ride in temps below 30*, the Wolvhammers are my go-to boots.

Yes, I would recomend this to a friend.

Fantastic winter riding boot. Great fit. Works with my SPD cleat really well. Also works well on a large, studded flat pedal. Very warm. If it's going to be like 10 degrees and snowing I throw some toe warmers in too just to be safe.

Yes, I would recomend this to a friend.

Review of the 45NRTH Wolvhammer Winter Cycling Boot - MY18:
My feet tend to get cold, tried moderate cold temp Sidi boot and neoprene covers for temps < 30 oF. Wolvhammer works much better. I got it a little big to accommodate thicker socks. Easy to put on and cinch, and take off. I sometimes use ordinary plastic bags as vapor barriers to keep interior dry. Cleat has no issues with XT spd.

Yes, I would recomend this to a friend.

Review of the 45NRTH Wolvhammer Winter Cycling Boot - MY18:
Although I live in the Pacific Northwest and don't ride in the snow often, I do ride in winter weather here that is wet and close to freezing. I have Reynauds in my feet and was tired of continually cold toes even with "toe warmers" in my winter riding shoes so after much searching, decided to go nuclear and ordered the Wolvhammers.
True confession is I haven't used them yet as it has been warmer since they arrived recently, but I am very impressed by the construction, fit (went 1 size up for length and happy I did), and comfort of the boot. I plan to use them with flat pedals and this should work out well.
I will be very surprised if these puppies aren't the answer for my sad feet next winter!

Yes, I would recomend this to a friend.
