all about the

Surly ECR 9-speed Complete

Drawing on the deep-breathed hints of Surly's Krampus, the ECR is the next up in what is, honestly, a ridiculously rad and still blossoming lineage, known since 2013 as 29 Plus. Gods, ghosts, and all the saints: Right on.

29 Plus is Surly's halfway category, referring to a frame that will run a 3" tire. It makes for a nice happy-medium between your standard all-mountain frame (tire clearance is usually 2.5" max) or a fat bike (ready for tires 4" - 5"), and the result for riding is a bounding, momentum-loving, obstacle-chomping machine. While a rig like that can be tweaked to maximize on speed -- see the Krampus -- working with a 3" tire size is a choice that's also brilliantly suited for a ride that preferences long-travel stability: trekking and touring in wilder conditions; browsing routes heavy in singletrack; or even taking on backwoods ventures of a more unmarked or unpredictable, varying terrain. Point is, wherever you're headed, ECR can get you there, and chances are, you'll have a serious dose of fun while you're at it.

Comes with Surly's Rabbit Hole rims (at 50mm wide), a very boss Jones Loop handlebar (710mm), regular mountain hubs (100mm front and 135mm rear), and a standard 34mm mountain headset. Just like an Ogre, the ECR can run racks, fenders and disc brakes, and it's also compatible with singlespeed, full-derailleur and IGH drivetrains, provisioning a Rohloff torque arm mount, should that sort of thing sparkle your fancy somewhere down the line.

Now go ride this thing. And be sure to send us your camp shots.
