"It varies completely based on the frame", the fork and the tire combination. I am riding a standard Motobecane Outcast 29, a White Brother's Rock Solid carbon fork, SnowCat 29"x44mm rim (the Rabbit Hole just a wee bit wider at 50mm), but only the Surly Knard 29" x 3 up front. There is room for a Rabbit Hole rim for both the front and rear, but only the front has room for the matching Surly Knard tire. A 2.3" is the biggest I can put on the rear - I tried a Kodiak 2.5" on the rear but that is too big. Still it's nice to have a wider rim on the rear - it stretches out the wider 29er tires but watch out for the ground to rim clearance at the lower pressures - but its normally the front tire that takes the most of that kind of beating. Hope this helps!
