all about the

Schwalbe Big Apple Tire, Performance HS430, Raceguard 29"

The Schwalbe Big Apple Tire is at the center of the "Balloonbike" movement. The idea is tire air suspension comparable with actual fork and rear shock technology for all-rigid bikes, simply because life is hard enough as it is.
  • Schwalbe's Performance Line
  • Wire Bead
  • 67 EPI (TPI) per ply

Schwalbe Premium Level RaceGuard belt technology was developed with racing in mind. Use of special rubber and layers of a nylon fabric produce very effective puncture protection with the most minimal increase in rolling resistance and overall weight.

"Air suspension built-in". The Schwalbe Big Apple began the Balloonbike trend, as a low-tech alternative to higher-tech suspension and shock absorption componentry. Big Apple tires are able to roll effectively at lower pressure, which creates a natural form of air cushioning. Effective rolling for normal tires requires higher pressures which can't match the 36% vibration absorption rate of the Big Apple. The HS430 is the newest tread pattern for the Big Apple from Schwalbe, most ideal for city riding and excelling in wet conditions.

questions about the

Schwalbe Big Apple Tire, Performance HS430, Raceguard 29"

asked by: 9rascon
are these for roadbikes or mountain bikes
answered by: canteau
They are road tires for 29er mountain bikes.
asked by: A Visitor
Can I mount these on a '12 Trek Marlin?
answered by: mwirth
In 2012 Trek made the Marlin only in a 29er version so mounting these should be no problem. You might want to check how much clearance in the chainstays you have as this is a 2.35'' tire. Thanks!
asked by: A Visitor
Are these the 2012 versions or the older versions? Thanks
answered by: slinderman
Looks like these are still the 2011 version.
asked by: A Visitor
My Redline D440 has 29x2.1 WTB vulpine tires. Can I switch up to these in the 2.35 width?
answered by: anonymous
I have the 2.35's on my d440 w/fenders....no clearance problems whatsoever.
answered by: bkearns
My guess is that shouldn't be any problem. Without the added tread, I can't see there being a clearance issue since the D440 is a true mountain frame.
asked by: A Visitor
Can I mount these to the stock wheels on a 2011 Monocog 29er? (Non-flight)
answered by: jrichard
Yes, however on the larger sizes of the tire you may run into clearance issues with the frame and/or fork.
asked by: merikgvr4
Are the tires kevlar or steel bead?
answered by: jrichard
These are a steel beaded tire as listed in the spec's.
asked by: A Visitor
Can I run these tubless?
answered by: canteau
They are designed to be run with tubes, you may be able to use a tire sealant such as Stans No Tubes but it may void the warranty.

Awesome tires! Very happy with them. A bit pricier than I was planning, but definitely worth it. Great for commuting with. I ride faster, expend less energy, and it's just all around more fun to ride on.

Big Apples in 29x2.35 are pretty much the only game in town for a 29er tire with some volume (other than Fat Franks).

Fast rolling. Nice cushion. Highly recommended.

Review of the Schwalbe Big Apple Tire, Performance HS430, Raceguard 29":
I converted my RedLine d440 into a street bike with these tires. The ride is great. I had WTB vulpine tires on it (stock for 2010) and with these fat monster tires I cut about 5 minutes off my commute. I have to say this is a great set up for the treacherous street of NYC.

Yes, I would recomend this to a friend.

On road for the winter with my Salsa Spearfish, these tires are quiet, and fast, almost made my Salsa feel like a road bike.

Not bad weight-wise, and have a reflector stripe.

I commute 10 miles every day on these in 2.3 size and they are awesome...saving me a solid 5 minutes on a 5 miles city streets riding way to work..grip and speed are great and they fill puncture proof ...have them for one month and loveem....i have off road single 29er so on saturday i just pop on a second set of wheels with Ardents and im ready to hit some rocky trails..wish 29 2.3 came in other colors like 26..they actually do ok on a hard pack trails on dry days..that gives me a good excuse to sometimes hit the trail on my way from work!

Summed up: king of the daily commute for an off road 29er setup

Review of the Schwalbe Big Apple Tire, Performance HS430, Raceguard 29":
Great tires! Quite, smooth with just enough tread to ride over the loose stuff without much worry and appreciate the reflective ring on the sidewall. I put a set of 2" tires my kona unit 29er and they work great for the road. I went with the smaller profile for urban use, so they work great for me. I have a feeling if you were going to ride on some rougher paths or trails, you may benefit from the larger 2.35" tire.

Summed up: Great urban tire.

Yes, I would recomend this to a friend.
