At the heart of the Zipp 101's is the world's first ever fully toroidal aluminum rim that was delveoped exclusively in the wind tunnel. The toroidal rim, a patent owned by Zipp, offers a deviation from the standard v-shaped rim technology for increased aerodynamic efficiency. Toroidal rims are designed with a bulge in the rim cross-section which effectively reduces the turbulance behind the tire at the leading edge of the wheel. This unique rim shape has been proven time and time again in testing to save 42 seconds on a 40 km stretch, when compared to standard aluminum wheelsets. It is considered to be the most aerodynamic rim profile when tested in any wind configuration.
Offering a depth of 30 mm, rim profile width of 24.5 mm and drilled out for 18 spokes, the Zipp 101 features an updated version of the Zipp 88 hubs. The new 88 hub features canted flanges which help to reduce the stress on spokes and offers a wider bearing stance resulting in increased stiffness and durability. The hubs boast the 17mm alloy axle, bearing pre-load adjustment and aerodynamic axel end-caps. With a narrower width at the bead hook than in the center the 101's can accommodate tires with a minimum width of 21 mm, quite uncommon of wider platform rims. However, according to Zipp, the 101's are optimized for use with 23 mm or 25 mm tires. The maximum width recommended is a 35 mm tire.
The Zipp 101 wheels are designed, manufactured and hand built in Speedway, Indiana. Zipp wheels are guarded by a warranty against manufacturing defects that extends two years from the original date of purchase.
