all about the

Garmin Edge 500 Black/Silver

Sharpen your cycling performance with the Garmin Edge 500, a lightweight GPS-based cycling computer for performance-driven cyclists. Loaded with data, Edge 500 tracks your distance, speed, location and elevation with high sensitivity GPS. Add an ANT compatible heart rate monitor, speed/cadence sensor or compatible power meter for a finely-tuned analysis of your ride.

The Garmin Edge 500 attaches easily to the stem or handlebars of your bike with its low-profile bike mount. The Edge attaches easily to the mount with a simple quarter-turn. When you're ready to ride, just power on your Edge, acquire GPS satellites and go. Edge 500 features a high-sensitivity GPS receiver with HotFix satellite prediction to calculate your position faster.

During your ride, the Garmin Edge 500 measures your speed, distance, time, calories burned, altitude, climb and descent, and records this data for your review. For extra-precise climb and descent data, Edge 500 also incorporates a barometric altimeter to pinpoint changes in elevation.

All Edge 500 versions work with third-party ANT -enabled power meters to display your power output in watts as you ride. This valuable data shows you how hard you're working, regardless of conditions affecting your ride, so you can train smarter.

Other helpful training features include a Courses feature, which helps you compare successive rides over the same route, as well as Auto Pause, Auto Lap and temperature readings. Edge also alerts you if you're moving, but the timer is not running.

When paired with a Garmin heart rate monitor, Edge 500 tracks heart beats per minute and uses your heart rate for advanced calorie computation, so you know how many calories you're burning. Train in a certain heart-rate zone to improve your fitness level or compare your pace and heart rate to past performance over the same ride.

Once your ride's done, connect Edge 500 to your computer with the included USB cable to analyze your performance. With a simple click, you can join a worldwide network of cyclists and outdoor enthusiasts through Garmin Connect, a one-stop site for data analysis and sharing.

Included in the box:

  • Edge 500
  • Bike mount
  • AC charger
  • USB cable
  • Owner's manual on disk
  • Quick start manual

questions about the

Garmin Edge 500 Black/Silver

asked by: A Visitor
Is speed measured bt GPS or does one need the cadence /speed sensor?
answered by: bkearns
The unit can measure the speed by GPS, it's just quite as accurate since satellite reception isn't going to be completely constant under trees, when next to hills, etc. Also, the speed and cadence sensor measures your speed as specific to your wheel and tire size, whereas the GPS just uses time and distance.

Review of the Garmin Edge 500 Black/Silver:
Edge 500 is easy to use. Ability to customize display - up to 3 "pages" which are easy to scroll through even when riding. HR monitor and speed/cadence sensor are great additions. I use mine on my mountain and road bikes (up to 3 bike profiles) on everything from recreational rides to races.

Review of the Garmin Edge 500 Black/Silver:
I loved my Garmin Edge 205. I smashed it in a crash. Finally replace it with the 500. I love it.
Simple setup. Awesome amount of info available to analyze. Used with the Strava service, great to compare rides to others in your area. So many ways to use I highly recommend skimming the owner's manual to not miss anything.

Summed up: I love it. Buy it now.

Review of the Garmin Edge 500 Black/Silver:
Great product. Had used a loaner late last year so knew what to expect. "Graduating" from a Cateye Double Wireless to this computer is like coming out of the dark-ages. Intuitive setup - little need for the manual as opposed to the pondering required for Cateye instructions that come in a size 4 font. Appears to be very accurate. The only unknown is battery life in cold weather, which was pathetic on the Cateye.

Review of the Garmin Edge 500 Black/Silver:
I talked to garmin support and they said that the edge 500 does not have the same gps module as the top of the line models. the top models lock it to the road/ path you are on not so for the 500.
if you want to buy this for its ability to track your progress, don't save up and get the 800. when I compare my bike shop rides (same route), the elevations are never close to being the same and the gps route is never the same. sometimes it cuts corners (never in the same spot) sometimes its on the road other times its in the woods. It really depends on a clear shot to the satellites. If you have a clear shot to the sky all the time this will work fine if your ride is tree covered, good luck.
I thought it would be fun to see the route using Google earth but its not accurate.
Its basically a novelty to have the gps feature. if you ride on tree covered roads and want to use the gps data get the edge 800..

Summed up: If I had known that the gps module wasn't the same throughout the model line i would have bought the edge 800

Review of the Garmin Edge 500 Black/Silver:
The Garmin 500 is the best choice for a no frills bike computer that has all the data you need. I thought about getting the Garmin 800, but it is bigger and I don't need the gps or color display. The 500 has all of the data I need with customizable settings and pages.

The only 1 gripe I have, and it really isnt a gripe as much as a feature request. It would have been great if you could have chosen what fields to display on each page. Currently, you can chose how many fields to display which is great, but choosing which specific ones would have been even better. In any case, DEFINITELY not a deal breaker.

I use the edge 500 on 2 bikes and it works perfectly. I also love the easy mount that comes with it.

Yes, I would recomend this to a friend.

Review of the Garmin Edge 500 Black/Silver:
I was a little worried about the rubber band mounts but after logging a few rough miles it hasn't moved around from the stem. Great piece of equipment for people obsessed with tracking, gps, and numbers. Great thing to have for every ride.

Summed up: Glad that I finally have this thing with me everywhere i go. Have had 0 issue with gps signal

Review of the Garmin Edge 500 Black/Silver:
I really like this product but I wish it was more accurate. The elevation so far has been off more than 100 feet. and the gps is the same. when you look at your route on garmin connect you will see that its not even on the road you were riding. it may show that you are riding under water or riding through buildings. (I have latest software and firmware)

Summed up: It gets points for compatibility with the ant tech. and data logging abilities but fails in its accuracy of GPS.

Yes, I would recomend this to a friend.
