Do the Eggbeater 3's have needle bearings like the Candy 3's?

Correct. The inner bearing are needle bearings and the outer bearings are cartridge.

Unfortunately not. The Crank Brothers Eggbeater pedal requires a shoe that is mountain SPD compatible 2 bolt.

I love these pedals. They are light and the changes to the new model are noticeable. They seem tougher than previous eggbeater pedals. I grabbed a second pair I like them so much.

Review of the Crank Brothers Eggbeater 3 Pedals Stainless with Blue Springs:
When I started MTB last year, my first pedals were Shimano SPD. It was okay although I have problems with entry at times. I even did a 6-hour event without problems. Unfortunately, I hit a rock while pedaling through a turn and broke a pedal. While waiting for a replacement, it got me thinking of trying an Eggbeater. I decided on the Eggbeater 3 for the price and built.

Needless to say, I won't need those Shimano SPD again! I can clip in and out much easier. No more fumbling! I like the four-sided entry which I think helped me a lot. I banged it one time on a hard pedal hitting a rock and cringed, thinking I probably broke it but it survived! I also like that it has some float, unlike the Shimano SPD.

Now, I am getting another one for my road bike which I just bought used. It works just as good on a road bike. I didn't feel like buying another set of shoes so I am using Eggbeater 3 on both.

The only negative I think is it needs maintenance every 100-300 hours. I'm just being lazy and the Shimano never needed maintenance (I guess until it breaks) but I'm just nitpicking. I'm sure the small cost of maintenance will be worth the pedals.

Summed up: Easy clip in and out, can be used on a mountain bike or Road bike, looks professional, tough! Love the float - good 4 the knees.

This is my 5th set of eggbeater pedals. The rest have moved on with their respective bikes as I sold them. I love these pedals, and the latest round of improvements just ups the ante. Very smooth, super strong and reliable. These have bounced off many rocks with no issues.

Their ability to shed mud and crap is unequaled. Very easy to get into and I have never popped out.

In all, this is a great pedal for a great price!

Review of the Crank Brothers Eggbeater 3 Pedals Stainless with Blue Springs:
This is my first set of clip-in pedals and I could not be happier. They feel very solidly built. Being able to clip in from four different angles makes snapping in a breeze. After a couple practice rides I don't even have to think about where to place my feet, they fall in and clip easily. To me the tension is just right. There's a very slight amount of play which lets my knees rest at the proper angle, but the feet still feel solidly locked in. Their standard cleats offer both 15 and 20 degree release angle depending on which foot you put them on. Very clever.

Summed up: I can't imagine a clipless pedal being any better. I'm more than pleased all around.

Great product. Own XT,XTR,Crank brothers Candy 3 2011. After trying the Candy 3 on the Top Fuel, went with the egg beater 3 for the 2012 Super Fly 100 Pro. No major issues to clip in and out. Had one mishap when I couldn't clip in at the start of a race and had a terrible start. This is were the Candy shines a bit more in the platform department. If your comfortable not having extra material under your shoes and care for weight, you will enjoy this pedal. Only ridden on a few times on training rides as well as one race and no mechanical issues. Time will tell.

My carbon, blue and silver bike came stock with Crank Bros Smarty pedals and I was looking for an upgrade. Saw these and thought they would match great in the color scheme. They sure do look good. much easier to snap into these than the Smartys. Only problem (and it's a big problem for an guy like me) is the blue started flaking off the springs on the very first ride. Crank Bros agreed that shouldn't happen and said I could send them in to be rebuilt if I wanted.

Summed up: My carbon, blue and silver bike came stock with Crank Bros Smarty pedals and I was looking for an upgrade.
