How is this kit different than the more expensive conversion kit that comes with the axle?
The kit with the axle is for hubs produced prior to July-2010 (chrome logo) and includes the new axle.

Why can't this be used with a regular 10mm thru bolt?
DT has only approved this for use with their RWS skewer system. Any other system could put an inadequate amount of force on the hub and bearing system causing it to bind and/or come loose. There are some situation where it could work, however there are none that we can recommend.
