Made for Crank Brothers
mountain cleats, the Crank Brothers Shoe Shield serves two possible functions. Mounting in between your cleat and
shoe, it can work as a shim to increase the reach of your cleat toward the
pedal engagement, and it also works as a protective barrier to prevent scarring
from cleats on carbon-soled shoes. Two shields are included in the package.
Weighs 4 grams each, made of stainless steel.

It's pretty simple. These do what they are designed to do. They keep your eggbeaters from digging groves into the carbon soles of your shoes. I haven't noticed any difference in clipping in or unclipping. I have noticed how much I am saving my shoes though. These are cheap insurance when you price out replacing carbon shoes. I guess if you are that concerned about weight it might be a factor but these are pretty light. Take an ounce or two less water or ditch the spare tube or something.
I finally upgraded to carbon-sole mountain-bike shoes, and needed something sturdier than the plastic shield from crank brothers. This shield is more solid, offers more protection and is a breeze to install. It accommodates both the Race or Premium Egg Beater cleats. Price could be cheaper considering how simple they are.
